The New York Giants agreed to a two-year, $13 million contract extension with backup quarterback Jameis Winston on Sunday, according to multiple reports. The deal keeps Winston under contract through the 2028 season.
Winston serves as the backup behind second-year starter Jaxson Dart but is viewed as a team leader within the organization. The 32-year-old quarterback is entering his second season with New York after joining the team in 2025.
Last season, Winston appeared in three games with two starts, throwing for 567 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. His limited action came as the Giants managed Dart's development as their franchise quarterback.
The veteran quarterback brings extensive experience to the Giants' quarterback room. Winston is entering his 12th NFL season and has made 89 career starts, with 70 of those coming during his time with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers from 2015-19.
Selected first overall by Tampa Bay in the 2015 NFL Draft, Winston earned Pro Bowl honors as a rookie. His most productive season came in 2019 when he set career highs with 5,109 passing yards, 33 touchdowns and 30 interceptions. Both his yardage and interception totals led the NFL that season.
Winston's career has included stops with multiple franchises beyond Tampa Bay and New York. He spent four seasons with the New Orleans Saints from 2020-23 before a brief stint with the Cleveland Browns in 2024.
Over his 108 career games, Winston has compiled 24,792 passing yards, 156 touchdowns and 113 interceptions. His 36-53 record as a starting quarterback reflects the ups and downs of his career, including dropping both starts last season with the Giants.
The extension provides the Giants with veteran depth and leadership at the quarterback position as they continue building around Dart. Winston's experience in high-pressure situations and familiarity with the organization made him an attractive candidate for a multi-year deal.
For Winston, the contract offers stability after bouncing between teams in recent seasons. The deal allows him to continue his role as a mentor while remaining ready to step in if needed during the Giants' upcoming campaign.
